The SAVE Awards Youth Peacemakers Training Program is an annual program
that engages youth in learning how to become peacemakers in their schools and
communities.
Each year youth in grades 3rd
through 12th from Columbus and surrounding
areas participate in the program by:
- Attending a one-day violence prevention training
- Working with SAVE staff to develop a unique and original violence prevention
presentation in the form of video, live drama, music, written expression, movement
(dance) or visual artistry.
- Participate in a Peace Camp and neighborhood
Peace March
- Participate in completing an evaluative process including pre-post tests and written
essays
Each violence prevention presentation must contain a
clear, concise message
about what youth can do to prevent violence in their schools and communities.
These presentations are revealed at the program’s finale celebration...The
SAVE Awards Premiere. See
videos!
These dedicated young people are
rewarded and honored as stars of the April premier event.
Thousands of central youth and families come to recognize, teach and empower
each other to prevent violence and create peace through the creative arts
and performances of the new youth peacemakers.
What kids love
about the SAVE Awards Program:
"I learned that violence
can be shown through music. I just thought that you could only see
violence until I heard a song I didn't like on the radio, but until
now I didn't know that it was depicting violence." - Hannah, The
Ohio State School for the Blind

“My name is Fatu and I am from West
Africa. The reason I took part in the program is because I am not a
violent person and want to be around people who are not violent. I
think that participating in the program has helped me do my
schoolwork and be respectful. I think being a part of the SAVE
program has made me a better person, because it has taught me to get
along with people and become a more responsible person. I’m very
happy to be in this program and it has taught me to help people to
be kind and to ignore negative influences.” – Fatu,
Linden-McKinley High School
“Ever since I went to the violence
free workshop, I can help make changes to violence and make bad
things into good things. I learned some things to solve conflicts.
Working with others has helped me to notice people react differently
to different things.” – Kylie, West Broad Elementary’s YES
Program
“I was excited to go to the SAVE
Awards because I could walk on the red carpet and got an award. I
was also excited to wear the new uniforms because they were so
cool.” – Quanicia, Heyl Elementary School
What adults love
about the SAVE Awards Program:

“The program provides a good message for the students and the
community.” – Godman Guild Advisor
“Seeing
our projects come together and watching our students grow”-
Ohio State School for the Blind Advisor
“The night of the SAVE Awards is always the best part. All of
the youth feel very special as the evening is about honoring
them as peacemakers.” – Linden McKinley High School
“The excitement of the students.” – Deshler Elementary
School
“The SAVE Awards coordinator was friendly and professional;
Being with other positive youth; locations for events were nice;
email updates were very helpful; the Media Violence program used
age appropriate clips. – Heyl Elementary School
Since 1997, youth across
Central Ohio have participated in the program. Even more youth have
experienced the program through viewing the videos in schools, recreation centers, therapeutic
groups and youth organizations as part of their violence prevention efforts.
The SAVE Awards program
is currently coordinated by SAVE staff
member,
Tracy Thornton.
